It is a legal requirement under the Electricity at work regulations1989 (EAW) that all portable electrical equipment must be regularly inspected and tested to ensure it is safe to use.
PAT Testing (Portable Appliance Testing) is simply a method of making sure that, as far as is possible, all electrical items are safe to use. If you have not been inspecting and testing your equipment, and there is a fault which injures, kills or causes a fire, you may be immediately liable for prosecution.
In the same way a car needs to go through an M.O.T once a year, an electrical item should be P.A.T tested once a year although, with certain items that are used on a daily basis, this can be increased to every 3 months to ensure safety.
For your own piece of mind it is worth having all your appliances checked especially if you deal with the public in any way, such as a guest house or bed and breakfast.
Dont get caught out! Have your appliances tested!
I hope that you find this website both interesting and useful and if you would like your appliances testing please contact me.
